KID’S WATER SAFETY AND AWARENESS

by Linda Bailey, Director of Swim Academy

Our responsibility as parents is to protect and prepare our children for success. American Swim Academy acknowledges that NO CHILD IS EVER WATERPROOF. They can, however help children to become water “safer”.

Did you know 70% of our world is covered in natural bodies of water? This percentage excludes the man-made aquatic environments such as swimming pools, ponds and fountains that are so abundant, especially here in California. As parents we are faced with some alarming statistics:

  • Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death among children ages 1-4 in California. (Drowning Prevention Foundation)
  • Of all preschoolers who drown, 70 percent are in the care of one or both parents at the time of the drowning and 75 percent are missing from sight for five minutes or less. ( Orange County , CA , Fire Authority)

Linda Bailey, Aqua Babies Program Director for the American Swim Academy, will share this information with you during her water safety and awareness seminar. She will provide you with safety tips and guidelines to develop with your families. A video presentation will showcase the techniques used in the Aqua Babies classes to help build under water comfort, beginning swimming skills and water safety skills for children ages 6 – 36 months and up.

American Swim Academy’s Aqua Babies Program brings together safety education and swimming skills to develop comfortable, confident children and families to live with the water. As members of the National Drowning Prevention Association, American Swim Academy follows their recommendations of layers of protection: Prevention, preparation and response.

Linda is a United States Swim School Association certified infant and toddler swim instructor and USA certified swim coach. She has more than 20 years experience teaching infants and toddlers. She is the instructor trainer and program developer for American Swim Academy’s Aqua Babies. Her primary goal is to grow infant toddler swimming awareness to prevent accidental drowning and to develop well-rounded families to live safely and confidently in the water.

Linda’s passion for swimming and education began when she was 8 months old as one of the first infant swimmers at the American Swim Academy (formerly Fremont Swim School) in 1973. At 15, she became a swim instructor and realized that she is a natural teacher. She continued her love for swimming and education through college at California State University East Bay and then earned a full swimming scholarship to California State University at Bakersfield. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. She was an elementary school teacher for six years. In 2003, after starting her own family, she decided to return to her true passion of swimming as an infant toddler swim instructor and director for the American Swim Academy. Her career combines all of her loves: children, education and swimming! For more information please go to www.americanswimacademy.com or call 925-479-7946.
